Basic schools of the RAS at the meeting of the President of the Russian Federation with the head of the RAS

For the meeting of the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the President of the Russian Federation, the TV channel “Russia 1” prepared a story about the excursion of a group of students from school №1514 to the Laboratory of Physics of Advanced Materials and Nanostructures and the Department of Theoretical Physics named after Edward V. Shpolsky. The head of this laboratory, corresponding member of the RAS A.V. Naumov, gave a lecture-demonstration on the fundamental research that provides at MPSU, which underpins breakthrough developments in our country. School students also participated in master classes on photonics, observational astronomy, X-ray structural analysis, optical spectroscopy and microscopy, biophysical chemistry, and medical physics provided by young scientists from the IPTIS MPSU (Konstantin Magaryan, Anton Zalygin, Sergey Bedin, Tatyana Egorovam Maxim Stepanov), in the educational and scientific centers of the IPTIS MPSU, technopark and Quantorium.

On January 30, a meeting (http://www.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/73347) was held between the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the President of the RAS Gennady Krasnikov, during which issues of education, science, and technology in our country were discussed. One of the significant topics in the conversation was the project “Basic Schools of the RAS (https://new.ras.ru/work/vzaimodeystvie-s-nauchno-obrazovatelnym-soobshchestvom/bazovye-shkoly-ran/), initiated in 2018 by the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, supported by the President of the Russian Federation. MPSU actively participates in the project “Basic Schools of the RAS” from its inception. In particular, MPSU is a co-organizer of the unique Troitsk School of advanced training of physics teachers (TSATPT) (http://edu.troitsk.ru/), provided in the interests of the basic schools of the RAS and schools participating in the project “Academic Class in Moscow School”. Additionally, for the fourth year in a row, MPSU employees have been involved in organizing the All-Russian competition for young physicists of the RAS Department of Physical Sciences, where leading scientists of our country – members and professors of the RAS – ask unconventional questions to attract schoolchildren to the most interesting questions of natural science (https://gpad.ac.ru/edu/).

Another key issue on the agenda was the intention of the RAS to once again take on the responsibility of expertise of school textbooks. During the meeting, Gennady Krasnikov drew attention to the fact that students have become less frequent in taking the Unified State Exam in physics, which in the future could become a serious problem in providing highly qualified employees for scientific institutions and high-tech sectors of the economics. Following the tasks set before higher education and science, MPSU will update the bachelor’s educational program in the Institute of Physics, Technology, and Information Systems in 2024. The following year will see the opening of a new direction “Fundamental Physics and Groundbeaking Technologies” to train qualified employee for both teaching and scientific research. In addition, MPSU is a participant in a pilot project to improve the system of higher education, within which the first enrollment has already been made in the Master’s program in the direction of “Teacher of Physics and Computer Science”.
